How to Save Democracy with Jon Favreau and Tommy Vietor of Pod Save America
Jon Favreau and Tommy Vietor, co-hosts of Pod Save America and founders of Crooked Media, remember when politics felt hopeful.Their latest venture, after working for Obama, starting Crooked Media, and launching a slew of great ventures and podcasts, is a user's guide to American government: Democracy or Else: How to Save America in 10 Easy Steps. They are some of the most informed, level-headed, and hilarious political voices around, and their book is the antidote to feeling stressed out, beat down, and powerless over politics. You certainly don’t have to be a political junky to appreciate that!

Project 25 sounds fantastic. Get rid of governmental bloat. Also, don't act as if these civil servants aren't politicized themselves. They do all they can to stymie an administration they don't like, which goes against the will of the people who voted the president in office.

I love Jon, Tommy, and Katie. At the same time, the continual head-scratching about “why is this rightward shift happening?” and the limitations of the economic analysis that is the response is frustrating. It’s almost always missing serious attention to the key element of race. The MAGA phenomenon has been, and remains, an overwhelmingly white phenomenon. People of color have been hit by all the same devastating economic factors, negative effects of globalization, and most certainly have little trust in institutions that have never worked for them, yet by and large they’re not running to Trump. The question of what (the unnamed identifier of white) people see in Trump is this: he plays to white resentment and white fear and portrays himself as the “white savior” who is going to save them from the inevitable diversification of the country and the world (fear of all of it - race, gender, sexuality, non-Christians, immigrants, etc.) and convincing them to see that diversity as the cause of all their woes. If you leave that out, none of it makes sense. Unfortunately the Dems have still not learned how to effectively speak to this in a way that is healing and transformative. Utilizing the analysis, techniques, and strategies in Heather McGhee’s “The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together” and Ian Haney Lopez’s “Merge Left: Fusing Race and Class, Winning Elections, and Saving America” would be a good place to start. Jon nails it when he talked about Deep Canvassing. ❤

Not too many from the Obama administration want to talk about it, but the housing and financial crisis of 2008 devastated millions of people. The government bailed out the banks and insurance companies, but did almost nothing for homeowners and real estate investors. Foreclosures went through the roofs, especially in places like Ohio and Florida, breaking all records, and tons of people lost their only equity. For many voters, this was the straw that broke the camel's back. It happened on George Bush's watch, left to Obama to fix. And both administrations failed to address the VERY SERIOUS pain that ordinary Americans had to endure. No wonder there is now a maga movement that wants to destroy everything institutional. Our institutions FAILED them, yet another time. Good luck getting them back. It will take generations for that pain and anger to be forgotten. In the meantime, Trump is the only one who speaks about their anger, pain and resentment. No matter how corrupt or failed he is, he is their mouthpiece, and he gets more votes than any other candidate around. They're sticking with him.

Heads Republican wins, tails Democrat lose... Democrats spend years harming middle class people and supporting gays. To the point it is this weird self harm to vote Democratic, as a LGBTQ+ member I get benefit from voting Democratic, as a bloody rich white entitled asshole I get benefits from voting Democratic, I still see my friends and family suffer, I see kids living in a worse situation than I had. At some point my own selfish assholery is not going to be enough for me to keep letting the left be "Republicans that like Gays". So at some point you start voting Republican to wake up the party. This is the INCREDIBLE HARMFUL FACT of a two party system, I can't go vote for Bernie socialist party to change the world, I have no other choice but to vote "blow the shit up" Republicans instead. This is why you are blind to European politics,, saw a guy getting voted in promising tail wind on roads for cyclists. Now all the other parties wasn't going to get behind him and make laws that give tail wind on roads... The guy did end up the deciding factor on a vote, so while his nonsense wasn't a factor, he did end up contributing to the betterment of the world, now even if you give some more votes to some group like the "right" shift you keep misunderstanding in Europa, the part that matters is that they become useful idiots and will vote for things that makes most people's lives better, while they can't really find enough people to start concentration camps, they can vote for stronger unions or more pay for health workers. That is hardly a right wing shift, that just make the left stronger.

You made my dad and I's last memory of doing something together before he was stricken down. I'll always love you for this. whenever this topic of "why isn't the Biden administration better at getting his accomplishments out and heard more" drives me crazy at this point. nobody ever mentions or takes into a account quite that there is a right-wing media monster of a machine that is working 24/7 overtime to kill and quash any of those good truths. Fox News, news max at this point the Wall Street journal even-they all work towards getting in Joe Biden's way-however they can do this. they work to not tell the positive things out there, while at the same time adding more negative too. they are actively working to thwart any good that can be said about and from biden all the time. this is not just my opinion. this is what is going on. just look at Fox News for one day vs. nbc. there is a huge difference. that same machine that is working overtime on telling lies about "the biden crime family". and using all their time to not report on the good things-is instead using their time and platforms to sew confusion and disinformation about biden and all he is doing, and about all democrats. I have never seen anything like it. and never dreamed it would actually come to this kind of childish and ridiculous behavior. remember when we learned that lying is bad. and wrong. and never works, ultimately. remember when we learned this important lesson in life? when we were like 5 years old?? there are people whose only job is to come up with ways to tear down any good things that democrats and biden are doing. the republicans are all about this. and the democrats do not do this. and it is ridiculous. so not only does biden and his administration have to do their jobs-which aren't easy on a good day, but they also have to spend energy on fighting the attack that they are always under. it is a miracle the biden administration has been able to anything good at all. and they have done a lot. it is ridiculous.

All people care about is their pocket book. Food costs, electricity, every freaking thing is way more expensive than 4 years ago. That’s what people care about. The economy sucks for normal Americans. Inflation is down? Yeah, then why is food 3 times more expensive than 3 years ago. You can’t afford to pay $6 a pound for apples, and don’t get anyone started about prices for everything else. Millionaire’s are fine. Wonderful.

I'm a person and I care about long-term things that will affect us forever, like doing things to combat climate change (as we experience temps in the high 90's in June!), and preserving the system of government we've have for close to 250 years. Those folks who don't understand the simple reasons that prices went up (supply chain issues) and stayed up (corporate greed and continued buying by consumers no matter what the price) will end up costing us our liberty if this election goes to the convicted con man who commits his crimes in front of us all. Americans are so much stupider than I ever imagined and it is heartbreaking.

inform thyself. educate yourself on why prices increased and why they remain up there. it's wrong to put that on the president or, his administration - particularly when it's done so well, to-date. ask yourself why corporate profits are so high. how can corporations pay their executives millions and billions but whine about raises to the minimum wage? exercise your capacity for independent research, critical thought, logical reasoning. there's no comparison between the candidates. one's a criminal and the other one isn't. one has integrity while the other wouldn't know what that is if it slapped him in the ass like a rolled up magazine with his photo on the cover.

Please read Project 2025 before casting a vote. Every college student in America should read it before they vote. Especially if they plan on attending a public university. Project 2025 recommends abolishing the Department of Education, whose programs would be either transferred to other government agencies, or terminated. All federal money terminated for schools and grants. Basic research would only be funded if it suits conservative principles, and teachers would be required to teach 27 years to get any debt relief instead of 5 to 10 years. Our wealthy christian corporate overlords feel the poor are better suited to minimum wage jobs than college. That public colleges are nothing more than liberal breeding grounds and should be on the chopping block.🤔

How about changing laws for congress of age limits and term limits. We shouldn’t have to choose between two old past it millionaires for President, and old stupid congressional members that shouldn’t have more than two four year terms at the most. Oh, and not being able to run after age 60. And I’m a 70 year old white woman who is fed up. Millionaires don’t have to worry about $6 loaves of bread, or health care costs or high interest rates and Supreme Court justices serving for life and taking bribes. So many of my middle class retired friends are working in their 80’s. A lot of us lost our retirement with the 2008 crash. Millionaires and Billionaires are fine. Great.

Congress people either serve two-year terms (House members) or six-year terms (Senators). I'd say 16-18 years would be a better limit simply because it is an important job that takes a lot of learning to do well. Policy is difficult, having a specialty takes time, etc. That would still prevent people from having it be their whole career, but would insure continuity of experience and acumen.
